BRAINERD AREA HONOR GUARD 
SALUTED VETERANS AT ALL VETERANS MEMORIAL
​ON VETERANS DAY

The Brainerd Honor Guard held a short ceremony at the All Veterans Memorial on November 11th, 2020 in honor of all veterans living and dead.  

They do this every Veterans Day regardless of rain, sleet, snow or even COVID!  They've seen it all, Korean veterans know cold and snow, Vietnam veterans know monsoon rain in steaming jungles and Gulf War veterans know sandstorms.

WALT STRAKA AWARDED
​CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR

October 14, 2020:  Local veteran Walt Straka received a Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony at Edgewood Vista in Brainerd.  Only 168 such medals have been given in our nation's history.  Straka was a member of the 194th Regiment that was mobilized just before World War II.  He fought bravely in the Philippines before taken prisoner by the Japanese in April 1942.  Half of the captives died during the Bataan Death March.  Walt survived and, as of this date, was 100 years old.  He also received the Minnesota World War II Memorial Medallion and an autographed copy of the book, Thunder on Bataan.

QUILT OF VALOR PRESENTATION: FEBRUARY 9, 2018

​On Friday, February 9, 2018, George Eide, 96 year-old uncle of Post 255 member Steve Eide, was presented with a Quilt of Valor from the Brainerd Area Quilt of Valor Foundation to honor his service during WWII in the Aleutian Islands. In addition to family members, there were many people from the Post, Auxiliary, Color Guard, Legion Riders and others in attendance to honor George on his special day.

3 GENERATIONS OF POST 255 MEMBERS

Over the holidays, these three got together for a three generation Legion membership photo. Jim Mark, long time Brainerd resident and member of the 40 et 8 in Post 255 is a Korean War veteran. His daughter, Susan Edwards, is an Air Force veteran. She currently serves as Post Adjutant and is the Assistant Chapter Director and Secretary of Brainerd Chapter of the American Legion Riders. Susan’s son, Jeremy Carlile, is serving as an Army Recruiter in North Seattle. He has served two combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star. All three are proud to call Post 255 their Legion home.
